Current Vibe | Finding Balance

As I mentioned earlier this week, I wanted to take a minute and get real with you when it comes to my current vibe. Hip Hop Hooray took a mini hiatus about a week ago so that I could take some time off to organize my thoughts and find balance. I was feeling totally uninspired which led to stepping away from the blog to figure out why. Needless to say that time didn't prove to be as helpful as I would have hoped. I did figure out why I wasn't feeling creative, but not what I wanted to do about it moving forward. Let me explain...
A portion of why I was feeling a lack of creativity in the first place was due to a shortage of content. Hip Hop Hooray is a lifestyle blog that covers a wide variety of topics that I love, but my true passion is creating style posts. I simply ran out of new styles to share from my current closet. This isn't the "so go shopping" type of fix, it's more than that. I read somewhere that it is better not to post at all, than to post something you are not inspired by. That concept really stuck with me throughout this last year of blogging, and I honestly feel like it has helped shape the type of content I put out. It really pushes me to create quality content for myself...and for you. I want to post, and I want it to be good

So where does that leave me? Good question. I've talked with some friends and family about it and the bottom line is my style has changed. I look at my Pinterest and don't recognize half of it as something I would pin again today. I jump on Facebook and feel so disconnected to it now. I've grown, and I want my little spaces of online real estate to reflect that change. I see my blog and have sooo many rad ideas on how to improve it moving forward, but I'm not sure If I have the resources to pull it off. Frankly, I probably don't have the resources to pull it off.

So at the end of the day I'm contemplating doing something dramatic. Something that would take an incredible amount of dedication, time, and commitment on my part. If I'm going to move forward with the blog (which I'm quite honestly super undecided about) I need to change it. I need to change a few things actually...

That's all for now! Come back tomorrow to read part two of my current vibe where I propose just the kind of change I've had in mind.

Ps. I realize there are way bigger problems in the world than the state of my closet. But for purposes of the blog, i wanted to share my head space in terms of what's been going down behind the scenes. Thanks for understanding and knowing me well enough to know this is a small, yet imperative part of what I do.

Double X's and O's on this one,
T.

Nutritionist Collaboration

Welcome back! So today is the day I finally get to share the exciting collaboration I have been working on with Stacy of Lemon Tree Wellness. I'll let Stacy introduce herself below, because over the next couple of weeks she will be sharing some of her suggestions for living a more balanced, healthy life. We're talking about tangible things you can do, that in some cases, will immediately change not only how you look - but more importantly how you feel. Hollllaaaaa!
I originally decided I wanted to work with a nutritionist (that's her above) after feeling a little lost in terms of my health journey. For a while Cory and I (and subsequently the babes) have been sneaking in subtle, yet what we feel are important changes to our diet and overall health. One small example is just switching our milk from dairy to almond milk. I was able to do a large amount of "research" (thanks Pinterest) on how to integrate eating clean, more green, and with less meat/milk in our diet. My inspiration was two fold: 1) I just really took an interest in trying to feed my family and myself the best stuff possible, and 2) after having the babes my body just wasn't the same.

For you mama's out there I know you'll read that and think...obviously, but I'm referring to so many other ways than just in appearance. But on that note, who doesn't want to look and feel their best? No matter what changes I made, I kept feeling like I wasn't at my best. So I went on a mission to figure it out.

I put the word out (on Facebook. duh.) that I was looking for a legit nutritionist and a friend of mine recommend I give her friend Stacy call. We met up and discussed my health history, concerns, and goals one night over dinner. I quickly realized this girl knows what's up which is why I'm so stoked she wanted to share some of it with you. Without further adu...

Hi, my name is Stacy. I am a wife, a mother, and the owner of Lemon Tree Health and Wellness where I practice as a holistic health coach. Holistic means that I look at how all the areas of your life are connected. My approach is not to dwell on calories, carbs, fats, and proteins. It's not to create a list of restrictions and/or "good foods" and "bad foods". Instead, I work with you to create a happy, healthy life in a way that is flexible and rewarding.

...As for her training and education:

I received my training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where I was educated in nutrition and various dietary theories. I also studied a variety of practical health coaching methods. I'm all about getting people back to their roots and finding what works for them to live a life of sustainable health.

Stacy and I have a mini series planned, but we'd love to hear from you! Are there any topics of interest you want her to cover? Leave a comment below or mention it over on my Instagram.

T.

The Warf

Also known as our new favorite spot at Disneyland/California Adventure. It's crazy how similar it feels to actually being in San Francisco, it literally takes us right back to our baby moon. Good times. Tonight was especially fun since we scouted out the bakery. (Is bread a carb?) One Mickey shaped Boudin sourdough bread later and we were hooked. Plus, the babes were completely fascinated by the ducks, and spent a good amount of time just playing outside overlooking the water. It's funny how skeptical I was about getting passes, when in reality it's been the best move we could have made for our family. I feel like we are really investing in our time together and making memories I know I will never forget. I hope the same goes for the rest of my crew...if we're judging based on how many times a day they ask to go (Cory included), I'd say we're solid.
On a different note: did you know this 4th of July weekend marks one year of blogging for Hip Hop Hooray? Thank you for sticking with me this last week while I took some time to get inspired, regroup and map out the future. The good news is I have some really awesome content planned for the next little while that I'm honestly so excited about. The bad news is I still feel like I'm at this crossroads and I'm not entirely sure which path to take. More on that later...

Check back tomorrow for my most recent collaboration announcement, and the following day for an update on my head space/current vibe after taking a mini hiatus.

Relaxed Vibes

I've been on such a boho kick lately, and the look I wore on Wednesday was no exception. I just love the relaxed vibe and cool prints, It's perfect for running around with the babes. And it's pretty obvious I'm all about that hat life.

FYI - I'm typing up today's blog on my phone (no bueno) but my internet woes should be all sorted out tomorrow!

Sister + Brother

Remember when I said Hudson Boy was way out of my league? Well he still is, and becomes more and more so every day. Savannah on the other hand has this kid on lockdown! Hudson has definitely met his match in her.

I remember wondering what their relationship would be like while I was pregnant with Hudson. I clearly remember thinking she was going to resent him because she would have to split all of the attention we used to give just her. While I'm sure there is a trace of that in her, she mostly just cares for him. Cares for him in a way that is so mature and sweet. It's actually funny to watch sometimes. She'll tell him "Hudson, you know you can't do that...you don't want to end up in time-out...do you?"  (In almost a quiet/serious voice when she thinks i'm not listening.) I know their relationship is bound to evolve as they get older, but for now I'll enjoy the view from here and pray it continues on this path...
(Don't worry, that's just an industrial grade electric outlet he's playing with...)

Zzzz

Tonight's agenda: Pretty Little Liars, then bed. I need to log a few extra hours tonight after a fun, but long day in the sun.

As I mentioned earlier this week, I wanted to share a few images I've been using as inspiration for my next home project. Then I read somewhere that there are serious consequences for posting Pinterest photos (a.k.a other people's content) to your blog - even if you give credit. Having said that, I'd still love to share what I've been up to on Pinterest, so if you're interested you can find and follow me HERE.

Boho Braids

Sunday I was running late to church (per usual) so I decided to try something new, in hopes of saving a little time. Well, not only did it shave off about 10 minutes, I ended up really loving the result. Here's how you can get this look:

  • Part hair into two sections.
  • Braid each side and secure with a tiny rubber elastic.
  • Hold one braid at the elastic and pull each of the three strands apart to give it a thicker appearance. Repeat on the other side.
  • Put your headband on where it's comfortable. I wore mine about an inch back from my hair line.
  • Take the first braid and wrap it around the bottom of the headband, tuck in the ends and secure with a bobby pin.
  • Repeat with the other side.

Over The Weekend...

There was a lot of running around with my crew. We finally got our back porch together and next up is our bedroom. I spent some time Saturday morning in the black hole (also known as Pinterest) and realized my style has changed a little since my last board binge. I started updating, and can't wait to share the new vibe.

He's Out of My League

I realized today that raising a little boy is way out of my league...
I get Savannah. She is literally a tiny version of me in so many ways. But Hudson Boy? I'm still learning what makes him, him. You would think getting my degree in psychology and having to study birth order and gender differences would have given me some clue, but I'm totally wingin' it. Shhh.

Take these photo's for example. Savannah would have never attempted something like this at his age. She would have been very timid at first, then slowly talked into giving it a try. Hudson on the other hand, was so eager to jump on and "go fast." He was highly frustrated (as you can see above) that attempt one didn't have him circling the loop like he saw his older buddies do a few days before. Instead of giving up though, he tried a few different tactics...one of which was leaning forward in hopes that the momentum would make it go. Adorable. Soon enough he understood how to use his leg to push off and quickly got the hang of it. Hudson may be unfamiliar to me in a few insignificant ways, but our souls are the same. I love this boy so fiercely for his determination and guts. He may be rough and tumble by nature...but they don't come any sweeter.

Good Fortune

Can we talk about these raaangs? Let's just say one size doesn't typically fit all, am I right? So the other day I was on Birch Street in Downtown Brea and stopped by Kaitlyn Clothing. I didn't find too much, but as I was making my way out of the store I noticed a plate full of the most beautiful trend rings, that from first glance looked like they would fit. Tried them on, and sure enough...every. single. one. That never happens! So I did what any other chubby handed and proud woman would do, and bought them all. I chalked my splurge up to good fortune and have been wearing them on repeat ever since. #win

Speaking of good fortune, you know when you discover a new-to-you brand (in this case, thanks to the sale rack at Nordstrom) and you ask yourself why it took you so long? For me, that brand was Free People. I guess I just always saw it as too theme-y, and although I dig the boho vibe, it often felt overdone. These cutoffs completely changed all of that. A) they tend to run large, so sizing down is a must and who doesn't love that?! B) the cut/fit/style of this denim is incredible. This specific pair are cut shorter in front and slightly longer in back, so it gives you the coverage you want, but still makes your legs look amazing. #winwin

What I Wore

Since we're still new to the whole Disneyland thing, we are doing our part to keep our game strong. Each trip we learn something new that should help make the next visit even more enjoyable. There's no such thing as a bad day at Disneyland, but not packing enough (or too much), going at peak times, and wearing uncomfortable shoes can really bring the entire experience down. We've only been a couple times and I'm already guilty of each rookie mistake. I am however, fully confident in my outfit choices, but have to remind myself that comfort is key when it comes to a day at the park. Thank God for Nike kicks.

Sunday Vibes

Our new church has a tradition of inviting the babes to join us in worship on the first Sunday of every month. When we first heard this, we were a little hesitant about it. It sounded like the sort of thing that would be really distracting and/or inconvenient. Today was the second time we experienced family worship, and it was amazing. Both babes are a little overwhelmed by the noise, but watching Hudson lift his little hands in praise seemed to make all of the grumbling grow quiet. I'm pretty sure I will remember that moment forever (even if he was just mimicking those of us around him...)

Sprinkles On Sprinkles

With tomorrow being #nationaldoughnutday I thought it only appropriate to give a shout out to my one true breakfast love. My admiration of these little a.m. sweets goes way back to elementary school. If I were hosting a slumber party, whether it was one friend or five, my dad would make sure we woke up to a selection of doughnuts the next morning. Naturally, sprinkles was always my jam. I just remember thinking I had the coolest dad ever. (I was right, thanks Pops!)

What's even more fun is sharing my mad love for doughnuts with the babes. I can so clearly remember Savannah's first doughnut. She was in heaven. I mean, who wouldn't love cake for breakfast?

Oh, and don't worry: word on the street is all doughnuts are sugar/calorie free on #nationaldoughnutday. So have at it. You're welcome

Hooray At Home: Patio Makeover

For the last two days I have been working my butt off cleaning up our yard, getting it prepped for the new decor I am bringing in. Until now our back porch has been a little bit of an afterthought. Then our neighbors gave us their old occasional set and it kind of set the project on fire. All of a sudden I had this vision for what I wanted the space to look like: really colorful, a little boho and nature inspired.

I'm still in the middle of purchasing some of the pieces and switching up the layout, so for now I'll leave you with a quick look at our new rug, pillows and lantern. I love how the textures and patterns are different, yet all play well together and help brighten/dress up the patio. More to come!
Here's where you can find the RUG + PILLOWS. Similar Lantern, HERE

Target With Two

Let's be honest for a minute here. Target trips with these two can sometimes be a frustrating experience. Beyond frustrating with the right combination of not enough snacks and too long in the shoe department. (My bad.)

But at the end of the day, they are the coolest kids I know and I love getting to spend time with them.  Savvy reminds me how fun it is to get popcorn and stroll through the book aisle. Hudson helps me see how far a smile can take you. This boy practically stops people in their tracks. He's just so sweet. Being a babe has it's benefits, and I consider myself lucky to get the fringe of said benefits just by being their mama.
